Marketplaces for Health Applications - Assessment of Requirements in Case of the German Public Health System

Multiple innovations in e-health have the proven potential to improve treatment success, reduce adverse events and healthcare spending. Despite the promising potential, verified in various studies, the diffusion speed of healthcare application is very low. A major challenge in healthcare is therefore not only the research and development for improved treatment, but also the comprehensive and effective diffusion of selected technologies to caregivers and patients. Hence, the paper investigates the theoretical background influencing the diffusion of innovations. It adopts the concept of application stores, which have shown high potential as accelerators for extensive distribution of software applications, for the domain of e-health. Requirements for such a marketplace are derived from the constraints of the public health system. The involved actors are identified and linked in a high level model.
